I started using closed captioning when I started with American and British television shows and movies. I am not a native english speaker and had trouble understanding some parts due to not being comfortable with the accent.

Now I can understand almost everything without closed captioning, but still use them to avoid missing out a few words.

Also, some shows such as Narcos are in Spanish. So I need English closed captioning since I do not understand Spanish at all.
